Vietnam's economy expanded at 8.18% in the first half of 2026, the fastest pace in Southeast Asia and well ahead of most forecasts β prompting United Overseas Bank to raise its full-year GDP growth projection to 8.5%. The revision makes UOB the most bullish major institution tracking Vietnam, sitting well above the Asian Development Bank's own upgraded estimate of 7.2%.
Broad-Based First-Half Momentum
The H1 result was not driven by a single sector. Industry, construction, services, and agriculture all contributed to the 8.18% reading, according to UOB's report. That breadth matters: growth concentrated in one export category is fragile; growth spread across the production chain is considerably harder to reverse. Vietnam's General Statistics Office confirmed the figure, which came in above even the government's own scenario planning for the period.
AI Demand Lifts Manufacturing
The manufacturing and processing sector remains the engine, and a new fuel has emerged. Global demand for artificial intelligence hardware β servers, semiconductors, and the cooling and power infrastructure around them β is flowing disproportionately to Vietnam's export factories. UOB flags this AI-driven demand cycle as a key structural tailwind rather than a cyclical blip, reinforcing the case that Vietnam's industrial base is moving up the value chain rather than remaining purely assembly-dependent.
FDI Pipeline Points to a Record Year
Registered foreign direct investment reached 34.7 billion USD in the first six months of 2026, a 61% jump year-on-year. Registered capital leads disbursement by months, sometimes quarters, so the figure implies a substantial wave of actual inflows still to come. UOB describes 2026 as potentially a record year for FDI attraction β a significant statement given Vietnam drew record commitments in both 2022 and 2023. The pipeline is particularly relevant to the second-half growth trajectory the government needs to hit its own 10%-plus annual target.
Dong Holds Firm as Regional Peers Slide
Currency stability has accompanied the growth acceleration. UOB notes the Vietnamese dong showed "impressive resilience" through June even as most Asian currencies weakened against the dollar. The bank maintains a stable-to-firming view on the VND, projecting the USD/VND rate to ease to 26,500 by the end of Q3 and 26,400 by Q4. A gradually strengthening dong is a positive signal for import-cost management and for foreign investors repatriating returns, though it requires the State Bank to continue walking the line between competitiveness and stability.
Risks: US Tariffs and the Global Trade Cycle
UOB does not dismiss the headwinds. Section 301 tariffs from the United States are scheduled to take effect from late July, adding friction to global trade flows at a moment when Vietnam's export-oriented model is running near full capacity. UOB urges close monitoring of the global trade cycle in the months ahead. Vietnam has shown, in its own words, "considerable resilience" against shocks including Middle East tensions, but a sustained US-driven tariff escalation would test that resilience more directly than geopolitical volatility has so far.
Where the Forecasts Sit
The gap between institutions is instructive. The ADB's 7.2% forecast, released on July 8, already placed Vietnam at the top of Southeast Asia. UOB's 8.5% sits 130 basis points above that, reflecting more weight on the FDI disbursement lag and AI manufacturing demand. Vietnam's own government scenario requires H2 growth of 11.9% to reach the official 10%-plus annual target β ambitious by any measure, but the H1 print has at least established a credible base.

Investor Takeaway
For investors with exposure to Vietnam manufacturing, industrial real estate, or VND-denominated assets, the combination of top-tier regional growth, a 61% surge in FDI commitments, and a stable currency presents a constructive backdrop through year-end. The principal watch item is US tariff implementation in late July: if Section 301 measures land harder than expected, export order books β and the H2 growth numbers β will feel it first.
